Build a Targeted Portfolio

Your portfolio should make the client think, “This person understands my problem.”

• Audit your existing work. Remove samples that pull you away from the type of work you want.
• Create case studies. Explain the client goal, design choices, and result.
• Keep your resume clean. Show relevant experience, tools, and project types.

Do not wait for every client to post a job. Some local businesses need better menus, signs, social graphics, packaging, or website visuals, but they have not written a formal project brief.

• Action: Send a short email with one specific design problem you noticed.
• Output: A direct conversation with a person who can say yes or no.

Build Self-Discipline

Getting the client is only part of the work. Freelance design also requires deadlines, file organization, scope control, and clear feedback rounds.

Set work hours, use written project terms, and send updates before the client has to ask. Strong design gets attention, but reliable communication gets repeat work.
